Firstly, I would like to take a brief moment and thank you for checking out my site. Writing has been my passion since I was a young boy. I began chronicling my first stories when I was ten years old. I wrote a story about a mouse and his cookie. I guess you can say it was my first book. Unfortunately, it has been misplaced over the years. This site gives me a chance to share with you the two books that I have been honored to get the chance published. However, I would like to let you know a little bit about me with this short biography.
I was born in Huntington Beach, CA on November 17, 1979, the first son to Joe and Karyn Seymour. My younger brother, Jeffrey was born two years later. A lot of my interest in writing developed from my early years, specifically with the divorce of my parents and dynamics that emerged over the subsequent years. We moved around a lot and I remember both my parents struggling economically. Yet, they continued to work hard and raise my brother and me, amazingly. We were able to attend fantastic schools and stay with our friends, even though we were constantly moving.
I was an Eader Elementary Eagle, then a Sowers Middle School Viking, and an Edison High Charger. I was always thought of myself as a normal kid, growing up in a normal setting, yet always found myself in sticky situations. I would not get into trouble (too much), but my stories and adventures growing up were somehow laced with an extra bit of excitement. I think it was thanks to these crazy circumstances that I would get into, that I was able to mesh my real life stories with a bit of imagination in order to create my first stories. It was the guidance from my Sophomore English teacher, Pauline Bachakes, that really jump started my ambition to be a writer. I thank her so much for helping to get me started on this path and encourage the creation of my particular style of writing.
In September 1998, I began my tenure at Chapman University. It was there, as a Panther, that I focused my studies specifically on writing. My major was in screenwriting and I wrote three screenplays during this time period which can be found in “Killing Dick and other Screenplays.” I took a study abroad program in Melbourne, Australia and studied Australian Film at the esteemed University of Melbourne. In Australia, I truly left my heart; A wonderful country full of wonderful people. It was during this trip that a lot of my self identification occurred, which really began to shine through in my following pieces. I had a brief stint as a UCLA Bruin where I worked with the incredible Deborah Baron, another instrumental person in my development as a writer.
In all my stories, I hope to create an engaging piece that is gripping and difficult to put down. I also want to detail a topic that everyone can relate to in some capacity to a situation in their own life, whether it is a positive or negative memory. I find that writing, not only brings me joy when I am able to share my stories and receive feedback, but is a cathartic method to deal with some of the painful events that have occurred in my life, situations that just anger me, or happy, crazy times that make for comical relief.
Currently, I live in Orange, CA and work for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I am a huge sports buff and since writing doesn’t pay the bills (yet), I need a day job. I can’t complain about mine. I am able to combine two of my major interests. I am working on a follow up to “Tangled” and wanting to share my stories with as many people as possible. I once again thank you for taking the time to check out my site and have an interest in my work.
Sincerely,
Joey
